About Me

Hello, I’m Xiangya (Sonya) Gao. For more than ten years, I have worked as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Texas, supporting individuals and families through their mental health journeys. I know how much courage it takes for young people and their families to reach out for help, and it is my privilege to walk alongside them.

I am currently pursuing my certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, expanding my ability to integrate both therapy and medication management. I believe that the strongest healing often comes from a balanced approach that honors both emotional growth and, when appropriate, medical support.

Right now, I am opening space to provide pro bono counseling services exclusively for children and adolescents under the age of 17. This includes both individual and family sessions. My goal is to make high-quality care more accessible for young people who may be struggling but whose families face financial or practical barriers to getting help.

In therapy, I use evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy, Attachment Theory, and Solution Focused Therapy. More importantly, I create a safe, non-judgmental environment where children and teens feel heard, respected, and empowered to grow. Together, we work on building coping skills, improving communication, strengthening self-awareness, and addressing challenges like anxiety, depression, school stress, family conflict, or identity concerns.

I have a special passion for supporting children and teens who feel misunderstood or isolated, including those navigating LGBTQIA+ identity issues, trauma, or major life transitions. My work is rooted in compassion, patience, and a genuine belief that every child has the strength to build resilience and thrive.

If you are a parent, caregiver, or young person who may benefit from these services, I warmly invite you to reach out. This is a space for hope, healing, and growth—at no cost to your family.
