About Me
Xiangya (Sonya) Gao, LPC, is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas with more than ten years of experience supporting individuals and families in their mental health journeys. She is currently pursuing certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, expanding her ability to integrate both therapy and, when appropriate, medication management, with the belief that true healing often comes from a balanced approach.
Sonya is now offering pro bono counseling services for children and adolescents under the age of 17, including both individual and family sessions, with the goal of making high-quality care more accessible to families facing financial or practical barriers. She draws from evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy, Attachment Theory, and Solution Focused Therapy, while creating a safe and non-judgmental environment where young people feel heard, respected, and empowered. Her work focuses on building coping skills, strengthening communication, improving self-awareness, and addressing concerns such as anxiety, depression, school stress, family conflict, and identity development.
With a special passion for supporting children and teens who feel misunderstood or isolated—including those navigating LGBTQIA+ identity concerns, trauma, or major life transitions—Sonya brings compassion, patience, and a deep belief in every child’s capacity for resilience and growth. Families and young people interested in these services are warmly invited to reach out and begin a journey of healing, hope, and connection—at no cost.
