Healing in Relationship

How Group Therapy Works

Group therapy offers a supportive, collaborative space where clients can connect with others who share similar experiences, identities, or healing goals. In a facilitated environment, group members learn from one another, practice new skills, explore emotions, and build a sense of belonging that’s often hard to find in day-to-day life.

Guided by a trained therapist, group therapy creates a community of understanding, validation, and mutual growth. Whether you’re navigating identity exploration, stress, relationships, mental health challenges, or simply wanting more authentic connection, group therapy provides a grounded place to be seen, heard, and supported.

At Selva, our groups center compassion, consent, cultural humility, and emotional safety-inviting each person to show up at their own pace while benefiting from shared wisdom, diverse perspectives, and collective healing.

Benefits of Group Therapy

Group therapy provides powerful benefits that individual therapy alone cannot match.

Real-World Connections

Unlike individual therapy, group sessions create a living laboratory where you can practice new social skills and receive immediate feedback in a safe environment. You'll develop deeper interpersonal awareness and learn how others perceive you, helping you build stronger relationships both in and outside the group.

Shared Understanding

There's profound comfort in knowing you're not alone in your struggles. Group members often share similar experiences, creating an environment of deep empathy and mutual support. Your challenges become lighter when shared with others who truly understand.

Cost-Effective Treatment

Group therapy typically costs less than individual sessions while offering additional benefits through peer interaction. You'll receive professional guidance and multiple perspectives at a fraction of the cost of one-on-one therapy.

Diverse Perspectives

Each group member brings unique insights and experiences to the table. You'll gain fresh perspectives on your challenges and learn different coping strategies that have worked for others. This collective wisdom enriches your therapeutic journey.

What To Expect

What is a process group?

A process therapy group is a type of group therapy that focuses on what is happening between members in the moment. Instead of following a set plan or learning specific skills, the group pays attention to real-time conversations, feelings, and reactions. Members talk about what comes up for them during the session and explore how they relate to others. By noticing these patterns together, people learn more about themselves, improve how they connect with others, and practice healthier ways of relating in a supportive space.

The Therapist's Role

In a process group, about 4-8 people meet on a regular schedule with a trained therapist. The therapist helps to guide conversations and support members as they interact with each other. Their role is to make sure the group feels emotionally safe while also encouraging honest, real expression. They help members notice and understand their relationship patterns and step in to guide the group when conflicts or tension come up. This helps members build stronger self-awareness and more supportive ways of connecting with others.

Therapeutic Value

The therapeutic value of a process group comes from the connections and insights it creates. Members receive thoughtful feedback from different perspectives and have a safe space to try out new ways of relating to others. They gain a deeper understanding of how their actions and words impact those around them while experiencing support, encouragement, and validation from peers.

Importance of Attendance

Showing up consistently to group therapy is important for both you and everyone else in the group. For your own growth, regular attendance helps you build trust with the group, feel safer sharing, and notice patterns in your relationships over time. Missing sessions means missing key moments in your therapy journey and can make it harder to keep the momentum you’ve built toward personal growth.

Attendance also matters for other group members. They rely on your perspective, support, and presence, and your absence can change the group dynamic or make others hesitate to share. When everyone shows up consistently, the group develops trust, safety, and a steady flow that allows everyone to do their best work. Being present helps create a predictable, supportive environment where each member can grow and feel connected.

Attendance Commitment & Payment Policy

In order to maintain the integrity, consistency, and therapeutic benefit of our group therapy program, clients are required to commit to attending all eight (8) consecutive weeks of group therapy upon enrollment with the exception of illness, holidays, or unexpected or emergency events.

Due to the limited number of spots available and the presence of a waitlist, we ask that clients honor their commitment to the full eight-week cycle. When you reserve a place in the group, that spot becomes unavailable to others who may be waiting for care. For this reason, clients will also be responsible for payment of all eight group therapy sessions, regardless of attendance.

We understand that unexpected circumstances may arise. Unfortunately, absences do not reduce the operational costs of running the group, nor can missed sessions be transferred, refunded, or rescheduled unless agreed upon by the group facilitator.
